Who We Are

Danforth Consulting is a fully licensed and insured LLC. Each instructor has at least 20 years of full time Law Enforcement experience. A mix of Local, State and Federal Agency knowledge has allowed for the development of this cutting edge program. Each instructor has a wealth of experience in teaching Active Shooter, Dynamic Reaction, and Critical Incident training to both the Law Enforcement Community and the Civilian Workforce. Some recipients of this training are PGA Tour HQs, Florida National Guard, Ring Power Corp., St. Johns County School system, and numerous private businesses in the South Florida and Northeast Florida areas.

Because all instructors are still active duty Law Enforcement Officers/Agents, or actively involved with law enforcement agencies, this training program continues to remain current and is designed to adapt as the threat matrix evolves.

Executive team

  • Mark M. Smith

    Founder / President

    Mark has over 33 years of combined federal law enforcement, local law enforcement and military experience. His experience includes: over 26 years with the U.S. Customs Service (in Miami, Fl.) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (in Miami and St. Augustine, Fl.), and over a year and 1/2 with the Saint Johns County Sheriff's Office where he currently works as a Deputy Sheriff. During his tenure in the U.S. Customs Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Mark held several senior operational leadership positions and served in both the Operations and Training Departments. At the time of his retirement in 8/2014 he held the title, Deputy Director National Marine Training Center St. Augustine, Florida. As a recognized authority on marine interdiction and law enforcement tactics, techniques and procedures, he was responsible for the development and delivery of the advanced tactical curriculum to approximately 500 officers/agents annually. Mark's experience includes training federal, state and local agencies and international partners in all aspects of maritime and land based tactical law enforcement to include; appropriate use of force, close quarters battle, advanced tactical firearms, pursuit, defensive tactics, tactical planning and high risk target apprehension. He also served on the U.S. Customs Special Response Team (11 years) as a tactical team member and training officer, executing hundreds of high-risk entries, apprehensions and security and protection details. His operational experience includes; interdiction of narcotics, seizure of illegal weapons, currency and contraband, conduct federal criminal investigations of persons and organizations, make arrests, serve search and arrest warrants, and safeguard the border of the United States. Mark has an extensive background and experience in course development, instructor training, assessment of needs and problem solving. His training qualifications include; Defensive Tactics Instructor Trainer, Firearms Instructor, Marine Tactics Instructor Trainer, Leadership Training, Presentation Skills Training, Course Development Training, Critical Incident Training, Tactical Response and Planning Training, Instructor Training and Project Management Training, He has been both a participant and leader of numerous special training projects. He has instructed at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy, Special Response Team Training Center, and the CBP Advanced Training Center. He has received, participated in, coordinated and provided training to U.S. Military Special Operations Units. Mark's dedication to duty and mission led him to receive the "Outstanding Federal Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award" from the U.S. Attorney Southern District of Florida. He also received numerous accommodations, awards, and letters of appreciation throughout his career. Mark founded Danforth Consulting to continue his life's passion of protecting and serving the people of the United States of America.

  • Brian D. Canova

    Executive Vice President

    Brian Canova has over 24 years of law enforcement experience with a large agency in Florida, holds the rank of Sargent and is still currently employed full time. His current assignment is the Training Section Coordinator. He is responsible for developing and delivering basic, advanced and specilized training to his agency which includes; firearms, tactics, use of force, response planning for critical incidents, and force protection. During his tenure, Brian has been a member of the SWAT Team for 18 years, and during that time he was the Team Commander for 7 years. He supervised one of two major crime investigative units and several specialty teams. Because of his knowledge and experience, he was called upon to solve problems within the agency during equipment selection and transition. His leadership and forethought led to the development of new procedures and protocol which greatly increased officer safety and survival and have been adopted by other local agencies and organizations. Brian is well respected in the Florida Law Enforcement Community and is frequently asked to provide assistance to federal , state and local agencies in matters of critical response training. He represented his agency as liason and partner to the Federal Joint Terrorism Task Force. His training qualifications include; Firearms and Specialty Munitions Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Tactical Planning Instructor, Response Planning Instructor. He has recieved numerous personal awards, achievement medals, and various letters of commendation and appreciation.

  • Damon A. Ostis

    Vice President Operations

    Damon is a retired Senior Special Agent from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He began his public service career with the Department of Veterans Affair as a business man and contract administrator before becoming a Special Agent with the U. S. Customs Service in Miami. Damon was assigned to a number of different programmatic areas including narcotics smuggling, money laundering, cargo hijacking, and violations of the Arms Export Control Act. He spent six years with the U.S. Customs Miami Special Response Team as a team member, squad leader, and the team’s executive officer (XO). Damon was assigned to the Office of Professional Responsibility and eventually became one of the agency’s most skilled undercover operatives and trainer. He worked on a collateral basis with the national academy as a senior instructor, providing both entry level training to undercover agent candidates, and advanced training in specific programmatic areas such as arms trafficking, smuggling and commercial fraud, to journeymen and senior agents. Damon was loaned to other agencies, including the Department of State to provide this training to law enforcement officers internationally. Damon has degrees in Business Administration, Public Administration, and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Upon retirement, Damon became a security consultant for companies who provide security services and investigations, executive protection, and pre-employment analysis for individuals requiring security clearances for access to sensitive and classified information.
